The Oatley Leo Club is a youth group devoted to helping and improving the community, both locally and internationally.
In addition to our monthly projects, our club also supports numerous charities.
Supporting Charities
Diabetes Camp
The Oatley Leos helped out at the Children with Diabetes Camp at Grose Vale on both Saturday 18th March and Saturday the 16th of September. This provided us with a great opportunity to meet members from Lions Clubs in other parts of Sydney such as the Richmond and Penrith Lions Clubs.
During the camp, the children alternated between playing sports and makings arts and crafts. While the kids had fun, the parents were educated on the latest developments in diabetes research.
PlanetArk National Tree Day
On the 30th of July 2006, 5 of our members travelled to Alexandria to help out at the National Tree Day. We helped the Oatley Lions in running the free BBQ supplied for the volunteers and finished the day off by planting trees. In total more than 316,000 volunteers participated in Tree Day, planting over 1.6 million native trees and shrubs at 3,600 sites around Australia.
The planting of these local native trees helps to provide food and shelter for Australia's wildlife, increasing native biodiversity and combating the habitat loss that threatens much of our wildlife.
On Star Day 2004, 2005 & 2006, Oatley Leo Club has been involved in selling merchandise at Hurstville Westfield to help improve the quality of life of sick children.
In 2005, we successfully fundraised $1063.55 for this honourable cause.

The Oatley Lions Club held a carnival style fundraiser in January 2005 to raise money for the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Oatley Leos helped out during the day by selling tickets for the raffle. Many performers volunteered and small businesses donated their profits from the day to UNICEF. In total, the day raised approximately $15 000.
RESPECT is an organization devoted to helping refugees. We have fundraised $1000 to buy a
generator for the Mohomou Refugee School in Guinea, West Africa. This generator powers all
the computers within the school and so is vital to the students’ education. In addition, we
have also established a pen pal exchange program with the refugees from the school to help
them develop their English as well as to raise our understanding of refugee’s lives.
In September 2005, our club donated $200 to the Special Education Unit at Georges River College,
Peakhurst High Campus towards their Leadership Camp for Children with Disabilities. The money
was raised from the selling of Krispy Kremes at the Oatley Lions Festival. The camp was held on
the 14th to 16th of November 2005 at Life Adventure Centre at Kurrajong. It was an excellent
opportunity for students to practice and develop their independence skills as they participated
in a combination of outdoor camp activities and leadership skills workshops.
Visit the George's River High Campus Peakhurst Website for more information.

Save Sight & Health Care
This year we also fundraised for the Lions Clubs NSW-ACT Save Sight & Health Care project by selling raffle tickets and raising $70.

N2 Convention
The 2005 N2 Convention was held at Campbelltown RSL on the 21st to the 23rd October 2005. The afternoon of 22nd October 2005 was dedicated to a Leos Forum and three of our members; Giselle, Agnes and Michelle were on the panel. This was an excellent opportunity for us to meet other Leos as well as to promote the role of Leos within the Lions family and the wider community.
N5 District Convention 2006
On Saturday the 28th of October 2006 the N5 District “Teddy Bear” Convention was held at Burwood RSL. Leo Michelle, Carla and Giselle attended and participated in the Opening Flag Ceremony.
The keynote speaker for the day was Fr Chris Riley who spoke about his experiences in his work with Youth Off The Streets (YOTS). It was very interesting to hear about other young people’s experiences and inspired our members to continue helping and serving others- especially other youth in the community.
The Oatley Leo Club, along with other clubs in the District donated survival kits to help YOTS, which were bags that included food and hygiene necessities.
N5 District Convention
At the 2005, which was held on 29th to the 31st October 2005 at Bankstown Sports Club, four Oatley Leo Club members, Michelle, Agnes, Carla and Jessica gave a powerpoint presentation about the activities of the club. We had huge success in promoting our club and Leo clubs in general to the entire Sydney Lions community.
Oatley Festival 2005
The Oatley Leos participate annually in the Oatley Festival,
an event held by the Oatley Lions. In 2005, we sold Krispy Kremes and made a
profit of $1315.50. We used this
money to fund several of our projects, such
as for a $1000 generator for the Mohomou Refugee School as part of the RESPECT
project and a $200 donation towards the Leadership Camp for Children with Disabilities.
Oatley Festival 2006
In 2006 we sold “I Love Oatley” T-Shirts as well as ran the second BBQ for the day. It was
our major fundraiser for the year raising over $2500. It was a great effort by the club and
ensures that we have essential funds for continuing many worthwhile projects throughout the coming year!
