			Indian civilization is one of the world's oldest, dating from about 3,000 B.C. The Moghuls who came later added to India's cultural heritage.

The subcontinent of India occupies an area of 1,266,900 square miles Socially, most of Indian village life continues to be conducted around the concept of the "joint family" system. The area of India is almost as large as all of Western Europe put together. This creates all kinds of variations. The people of Southern India, for example, differ just about as much from the people in the area around Delhi-in language, customs, costumes, holidays, even the kinds of houses they live in, as say, the Italians do from the Norwegians. New Delhi is situated in North Central India on the Gangetic plain, 700 feet above sea level. It is near the west bank of the Jamuna River, a tributary of the Ganges. The Gangetic plain is one of the largest and most densely populated plains in the world. It extends from the Himalayan foothills to the Bay of Bengal near Calcutta.
