hiei
Ah, the inevitable article on Hiei. You can't have a Yu Yu Hakusho site without some mention of Hiei, can you? It seems that you can't explain Hiei's story without including Kurama in there. You can't talk about Kurama without talking about Hiei. They're two sides of the same coin, yin and yang. If there is no Hiei, there is no Kurama. And without Kurama, there is no Hiei. It's as simple as that.

Unlike the other characters of Yu Yu Hakusho, Kurama and Hiei held a special bond with each other beforehand. They had met one year before any of them met Yusuke. Kurama had to save a lady friend of his from an evil dude, and Hiei had to supposedly save his sister from an evil dude. The evil dude was the same for both of them. This was how they met.

And a year later, Hiei sought Kurama out again. "Do you know why I chose Kurama as my partner? To avoid fighting him myself." Somehow, Hiei knew that they would encounter again no matter what he would do, and, I'm guessing that, he wanted it that way. People who meet Kurama are inevitably attracted to him, and Hiei was no exception.

The beautiful thing about their relationship was the loyalty between the two. When Hiei was carrying out his sentence, who was the one right beside him to take the punishment? Who was the one who always watched Kurama's battles to make sure he didn't die? And what was even more interesting was that they both changed each other for the better. Kurama didn't usually express loyalty to anyone. He was a fickle character, and he would do anything to get what he wanted.

Some might argue that this was Shiori's doing, but I think Hiei played an important role as well. When Kurama and Hiei first met, there were no signs of anyone being friends with the fox. He seemed like a lone wolf- and he was probably that way all his life. Yet in the show, it seemed as though Kurama was remotely socializing with his biology pals.

And now, the final question: Are they lovers?

     My answer? Maybe.

Even for friends, they're extremely close, yet distant enough for growth in their relationship. Hiei sure as hell doesn't understand Kurama, and Kurama could never understand that enigma of a man, Hiei. They're close enough to finish each other's sentences and finish each other's jokes. Their conversations are delightfully clever and sarcastic as though it was one talking to himself. They seem to be in perfect harmony with one another whether it be fighting against an enemy or walking down the block.

But they also disagree with each other. Their arguments are oh-so-adorable.

Yoshihiro Togashi did say that he didn't intend Kurama and Hiei to be lovers, but he also said that in the end, it became matter of opinion. So they might be lovers. There's certainly enough hints for it to be justified. Of all pairings in YYH, KxH is my favorite. I don't know why. I don't know exactly how. It just happened.

And, somehow, I doubt that the great Youko Kurama is straight. Humans may have things against homosexuality, but demons probably don't. It probably doesn't matter what gender their lover is as long as there is sex drive (you know what they say about the youko sex drive ^_~).

In the end, it's a matter of opinion. You may not like a pairing like KxH, or you may adore KxH (like moi). Try not to flame each other and we'll have a peaceful coexistance.
