THE TALE OF THE LOST CAN

The Original Letter in 7Days, 20th July 2006.

On the morning of Wednesday July 19, I lost a half-finished can of Coca-Cola. I believe that I left the can in the back of a taxi, having foolishly put it down to sort out payment. While I have contacted all of Dubai’s taxi companies, none were willing to assist me with my problem, rudely claiming that for just dhs1 I could purchase another one. This may be the case, but this particular can has sentimental value as it was given to me by a dear friend. If anyone comes across the can (it is red, with Coca-Cola written on the side in white lettering) please contact dubaienquirer

Thanks,
Clive Enquirer

AND THE HEARTFELT RESPONSE FROM THE PEOPLE OF DUBAI
Dear Clive
I used a Taxi on Wednesday July 19. Funnily enough, it had a half full can of coke in it.  If you can provide me with a finger print, we can check and see if it matches those that are possibly on the surface of the can.  As it has sentimental value, you might know the bar code number?
Kind regards
J
Hi Clive, I saw your can of coke at the Airport in Dubai.
The Can of Coke was with a very attractive Russian women, there were
boarding a flight to Bolivia
hope this helps.

Hi,
I suppose you were trying to show off your humor, saying that you lost your coca-cola can, which is red, and has the coca-cola writing on the side of it :S Please tell me its a JOKE ! Cause I eally enjoyed it !!
Kind Regards,
R
Dear Clive,
Last Wednesday morning, 19th July, I found a half-finished can of Coca-Cola in the back of a Dubai Taxi that may match your description (red, with Coca-Cola written on the side in white lettering). When I spotted it in the rear cup holder of the Corolla cab, I took it directly to the nearest police station, however when I tried handing it in, the duty officer told me they weren't interested in that kind of coke. They told me to stop wasting their time. Fortunately a friend read your appeal in 7Days, so now we can hopefully reunite you with your lost property.
Kind regards, J

Oh dear,is it made up of gold? Don’t waste your time seaching for it if it’s just a normal Coca-cola can since you will be like psychologically pathetic…Cheers!

WHY oh why can’t we have more writers like this. Life would have so much more enjoyment for readers in Dubai.

I have made two taxi journeys since reading yesterdays heart wrenching story of the lost Coca Cola can. On carrying out a thorough search on each occasion I have been unable to locate your cherished can, although I did find a piece of dark grey gravel with jagged edges and an approximate dimension of 1cm². I instinctively pocketed the piece of gravel with the intention of returning it to its rightful owner. Unfortunately the driver saw this and became irate thinking I had found something of value. He insisting that I empted my pocket which consisted of a crunched up 10Dhs note, a half empty packet of Wrigley’s Extra Sugar Free Gum and a piece of gravel. Unable to convince the driver I ended up parting with the 10Dhs note. The irony is that in the confusion I lost my Chewing Gum which is causing me great pain as this particular packet has high sentimental value to me.

Clive Enquirer..I feel for you. Half-filled coke cans are, in almost all cases, emptied of their contents and then either crushed or kicked about mercilessly. I think you should advertise a reward for the finder along with a mercy plea I want to help…what font is the ‘Coca Cola’ lettering in?

by Jay Bee on July 23rd, 2006 at 2:44 pm
And one of the most important the questions is:
Is the can half full or half empty?

Dear Clive Enquirer.

I believe I have found your half-finshed can of Coca-Cola. I came across it while walking my dog through a patch of desert up in Jebel-Ali. I’m sorry to say it is no longer half-finished, however although empty the can bears the white lettering you so carefully described in your letter and is in pretty good shape considering. You must be very relieved. You can contact me through 7days so we can arrange a time for 7DAYS to identify the missing object. I’m only too happy to have rescued it before it got into the wrong hands.

After reading your sad story, I am compelled to reply with some form of help. Although not your original and obviously most cherished can, I have recently come into possession of approximately 120ml of Mountain Dew (in a limited edition only five million ever made) bottle which I saw being nonchalantly discarded from the window of a Landcruiser. Although I too cherish this possession I feel that giving it to you will hopefully ease the pain in your heart.

In reference to the letter from Clive who lost his can of Coke in a taxi, well I can totally sympathise as I had a similar experience. I caught a taxi home from Trilogy the other night and asked the taxi driver if he would kindly stop at the petrol station as myself and my companion had a very bad case of the munchies! So he stopped at the next petrol station, we jumped out and grabbed a few snacks for the journey back to Rashadiya. Along the journey the taxi driver had remarked that we had been very selfish not to have got him something as well as he too was having the unpleasant task of having to drive all the way to Rashadiya, and insisted that I share my Snickers or be turfed out the taxi. I didn’t know what to say, so I reluctantly handed over the Snickers and the taxi driver happily drove us home, he even had the cheek to charge us a full fare, not deducting for the Snickers bar!

Has this very strange incident happened to anyone else?

I can’t imagine how silly the letter of "losing half can of coke in the taxi" is. Is your paper silly this much to publish such kind of letters. Is it that we have nothing to worry about except a "BIG LOSS" of a half can of coke? To Clive Enquirer, you are a very silly person. Don’t waste our time in reading our messages.

To sss (21july 06) you dont really get what point clive was trying to make maybe you are one of those people who throws rubbish everywhere. wakeup 7days has the right to publish it. thanks to 7days for their great work.

sss, its obvious you dont want to celebrate individuality. Although not of the most pressing issues of the time, i thought that it was quite amusing to read the letter about a “mising” can of coke. You must realise every one is different, if it make clive happy to write such things why tell him he is silly and possibly take away his happiness? if something makes u happy its better than making you sad. I think that is what your trying to do though sss, Make people sad. Could this be the solution to your name: Sad Sad Sad?

This is so refreshing compared to the normal arguements that occur in these forums. Though my heart does go out to the lost Coke Can.

Man, you must be kidding me, Am sure that he was trying to show a sense of humor for all readers to enjoy. Well let me tell you that I really enjoyed it

Hey Clive, i think i can help you. Come over to the Recycling centre at Emirates Environmental Group. Your can will be amongst the many ready to be recycled. Please then donate your buccal sample so the kind staff there can scan the “very few” cans for the select one bearing your DNA. You will then be escorted to the topmost floor of the highest building on Sheikh Zayed Road with a complimentary dinner and then given a front page article in 7Days. I am sure you will heed to my advice and act promptly. ‘Cause the EEG guys don’t like empty cans lying around for too long you know…!

Hey Clive..
Its been 5 days since you lost your Cola Can.I guess
you will have to live up to the fact that you will not get
it again. And in future try to be more careful with things that hold sentimental values.
Charles Thomas
dear clive,
regarding your clearly heartfelt distress at the loss of one can of coke on 19 july, i fear that you may be fretting unnecessarily, for only just yesterday i saw, on the jumeirah public beach beside dubai marine beach hotel a doppelganger of your can of coca cola. It was similar in every way (red colour, with with letters c o c a c o l a emblazoned accross it). Although i think that he was no longer half finished, for he was completely dry.
I am afraid to confirm that your sorely missed beverage was lounging on the sand surrounded by blonde beauties with 'Olga' tattooed on thier biceps, and i do declare, that i could see him (for i do assume that he is a a male of the can species) smiling. Therefore i do emplore you, hurry down to the aforementioned location where you too can be sucked dry by a blond beauty called olga.
