The Trea$ury

by Jack Kincaid / jkinca1@cugkc.cjb.net

Well, here it is April again.  You can see the beginning of the tree buds starting to peek out.  The brown grass is starting to get patches of green.  Of course that means the weeds are getting an early start, but nonetheless spring is just around the corner.

First off, I guess I owe #16 from ACUG an apology.  After reading in their newsletter "The Village Green" that he called me about some Commodore stuff and at the moment I can't remember what he wanted.  Not unusual for me.  I know we exchange newsletters with other clubs, but I didn't think that someone from one of the other clubs would call.  Sorry about that.  I do try to keep items for local members, however, if I have something you want I see no reason why I can't sell it to anyone.  All money goes to the club because most of the items were donated.  I have just started to inventory the stuff, which will take some time.  You can email me at jkinca1@cugkc.cjb.net.

At the March meeting we had five members show up.  We missed Helen and Les Lacy;  they were in the process of moving to Lee's Summit in April.  Ken Clayton was also a no show.  Gary had his laptop and showed us how to transfer Commodore files from a 1541 drive to a hard drive on the laptop using Star Commander.  Tom had his famous cardboard box with some goodies i.e., games, which we reviewed.

Bethyl, Ken, Tom, and Vance:  Please bring money to the next meeting you attend.  It's that time of year again.  Thanks.

Next meeting will be on April 12, 2007, at the Plaza Library at 6:30 pm in the Small Meeting room.

I still have Commodore hardware and software for sale.  Call or see me at the next meeting.  My phone number is 816.761.4777 and I am home most days after 4:00 pm.

Editor’s Gambit

by Lenard Roach / lroach1@cugkc.cjb.net

Welcome to April!  I, for one, am thankful that it is finally spring.  I am tired of walking in sub artic weather to get the mail or take out the trash.  However, on the down side, I have to drive through my neighborhood and interrupt the dozens of street basketball games in session just to get to the house.  I guess there will always be a trade off in order to get the better weather.

On the Commodore front I have done very little.  I am planning on some serious Commodore work when June gets here, but for right now I am only working on the newsletter on the machine.  For June, I want to pull my notes together and prepare my talks on the GABE.U.PAK.64 and "Run/Stop-Restore" for the CommVEx.  I also plan on making an updated version of "The Envelope Addressor."  This small change will add an option to allow the user to print a sheet that will fold and fit into a check mailer envelope.  This is the envelope that has two windows showing the addressor and addressee.  I will also eliminate the "Attn:" line, which seems to be the biggest irritant to those who use the program.  The reason for this update is my lack of knowledge of Commodore printers.  When TEA was written, it was written with only those printers that advance the paper without the need of the tractor gears on each side of the cylinder in mind.  My prejudice concluded that all printers worked the same way, until I met my latest printer, the Seikosha SP-1000VC.  This printer needed the tractor gears to advance the paper; otherwise the printer would print an entire paragraph on one line.  Emails from other Commodore users who also use the tractor gear printers had the same problem, thus the need for a program upgrade which, I pray, will fix this problem.

I signed on to http://www.commodore.ca/forum recently and discovered that a certain someone has been bragging about my speaking on the aforementioned items at CommVEx.  I appreciate this person's enthusiasm and I pray that I can live up to my "press" as mentioned in the forum.

Speaking of CommVEx, I was emailing Robert Bernardo of the Fresno Commodore Users Group and he has asked that all vendors to please bring something Commodore to raffle off while at the show.  I have volunteered a copy of "Run/Stop-Restore" (autograph optional).  I also sent this information to our frugal treasurer who is, according to this month's communiqué, in the process of cataloguing all of the Commodore equipment and software owned by the CUGKC.  Jack has offered on behalf of the club whatever it is we want to send along.  The question to the membership is:  What is it that we would like to put into the raffle?  To help with that please go to http://www.commodore.ca/forum, then click on the "Raffle ..." link.  I hope to hear a final decision from the membership by June and the item(s) picked up and loaded on the van before July 25th.  I pray that out of our vast Commodore arsenal we can find something unique that will stand out in such a prestigious crowd of Commodore equipment.

I was also batting around with Mr. Bernardo the idea of blowing up my favorite picture in the book (that of the "Commodore Commando") and making it poster size.  Mr. Bernardo came up with some great ideas on how to get it done and where.  Once done, I hope to display it at our table at the CommVEx.

In my rantings last month I forgot to add to my list of Commodore related events that the MossyCon3 convention is happening in Astoria, Oregon sometime this month.  This computer powwow is hosted by the Anything Commodore Users Group #447 led by its great Chancellor, Lord Ronin.  For exact dates, times, and the event itinerary please contact his lordship at lordronin@vcsweb.com.  His lordship is a wonderful person and, at least from my communiqués with him, is willing to talk Commodore with anyone.  Jack also alluded to him in his article this month.

With all this said, I'll put an end to this article.  Any further Commodore news and information will have to wait until next month.  This is just another way of saying I have no more news.
