Ryte Bytes

March, 2007 -- Volume 28, Number 3

Ryte Bytes is the monthly newsletter of the Commodore Users Group of Kansas City (CUGKC). This newsletter will not appear on CUGKC's website before that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting. This is in deference to actual CUGKC members. The Webmaster will strive to publish it no later than 10 days after that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting.

If you would like to join CUGKC, we would love to have you!

The Trea$ury

Now that the sun has come out and the temperature has risen to banish the dreaded white stuff, are you thinking of spring?  Well not so fast!  Winter isn't through with us yet, so hunker down and keep warm for a little longer.

As of the February meeting we have a new member!  Gary Dickman, thanks for joining our little group.  Gary is the owner of The Computer Garage at 1827 Washington Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas.  Business phone:  913.362.4200.  Email: tcginc@thecomputergarage.com.  If you need work on your computer, give Gary a call.  Gary also gave us an update on the Hummer hack he is doing.  Also Lenard Roach renewed his commitment for another year.  Thanks for your support.  We took turns playing games and talking about computer stuff.

Bethyl, Tom, and Vance, please being money to the next meeting you attend.  It's that time of year again!  Thanks.

Next meeting will be on March 8th, 2007 at the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library at 6:30pm in the Small Meeting Room.

You got money?  I got Commodore stuff.  LOTS of Commodore stuff, looking for wonderful homes to work in.  Check with me at the next meeting or buzz me on the landline at 816.761.4777.  I am home most days after 4:00pm.

Editor’s Gambit

by Lenard Roach / lroach1@cugkc.cjb.net

No matter how often I see it, every February it's a hustle job to get Ryte Bytes out by the first of March.  That's only because I have THREE DAYS to assemble, transpose, graphic, paste, and copy the newsletter.  Any other month of the year I give myself about seven days, but these short Februarys always catch me off guard.  I have lived through 43 Februarys so far and it hasn't failed yet.

It seems that the CUGKC does its best without me showing up at meetings.  Already we have a new member!  Rockin'!  Mr. Gary Dickman, welcome to the ranks of this little gathering called The Commodore Users Group of Kansas City.  I think we met at the Christmas 2006 meeting.  I was the extremely fat guy with the hot brunette and 6' tall 14 year old student of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.   Anyway, your name and address will be added to the official CUGKC roster and entered into The Envelope Addressor's database.

According to the list of members I have here at the Roach Motel, only our Officer At Large is up to pay dues for this month.  Jon Searle joined the CUGKC back in 1993 and up to recently has been a valuable asset to Commodore in Kansas City offering hardware, software, and repairs.  Due to a severe decline in Commodore needs, Jon closed the doors to his Commodore Man shop back about 2003, I think.  I guess we may be knocking on Mr. Dickman's door now if he wishes to take on the need of Commodore machine repair.  I personally have a 1541-II that is out of alignment so I might be emailing him for prices and estimated time to get the job done.

Jack reported an increase of $50 to the CUGKC kitty.  That is one fat cat!  I don't know what we are going to do with all that money.  I know that LoadStar is probably up for renewal and there's always something on eBay that the club could use in the way of Commodore equipment.

So, what is new in Commodore that I might know about?  Thanks be to God for making me the editor of the Fresno, California Commodore newsletter, for they have a good grip on the pulse of anything Commodore happening in America.

Coming up quickly is the Cincinnati Commodore Club Spring Expo happening on May 5th and 6th in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.  This expo will have speakers (TBA), demos, and dealers.  Any CUGKC member desiring more information should contact Roger Hoyer at thunderbird@iglou.com.  Prices are $10 each.

Next is the Vintage Computer Festival version 4.0 on June 9th and 10th at the InfoAge Science Museum in Wall, New Jersey.  This meeting will mark the 30th anniversary of the PET computer system by having PET gurus Chuck Peddle, Bil Herd, Bob Russell, and Dave Haynie.  Please visit the museum's website at http://www.infoage.org for more information, times, and hotel registration.

Finally on this list is the CommVEx version 3.0 happening in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 28th and 29th.  This meeting is the combined efforts of the Fresno Commodore Users Group and the Clark County Commodore Computer Club.  I personally am planning to attend this meeting, for I have been invited to speak again, even though I hosed Mr. Bernardo last year due to another previous engagement, he invited me out to speak again.  I will be out of my element with all those Commodore gurus around, but I guess this meeting will need some comic relief.  I will basically say, "Thank you.  Here's my stuff.  I'm at X table.  Come visit.  Thank you for having me."  Wow!  That's going to be worth everyone's time.  Times, itinerary, website, email, and hotel information will follow as the information becomes available.

That's about all I know about so far.  Keep you eye right here in Ryte Bytes for more information and useless banter as it comes to mind.
