Ryte Bytes

February, 2007 -- Volume 28, Number 2

Ryte Bytes is the monthly newsletter of the Commodore Users Group of Kansas City (CUGKC). This newsletter will not appear on CUGKC's website before that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting. This is in deference to actual CUGKC members. The Webmaster will strive to publish it no later than 10 days after that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting.

If you would like to join CUGKC, we would love to have you!

The Trea$ury

By the time you read this, I hope all or at least most of the ice and snow will be melted.  The last snow was great for building snowmen and making snowballs!

Sorry for last month's snafu with the newsletter.  I brought a copy of my part to the meeting so all was not lost.

Mike and Gary brought a little game that they are going to hack.  It has the C64 DTV chip in it.  It is the same chip that is in the 64 DTV joystick that Scott got a year ago.  I am looking forward to see the results.

Ken demoed the Kawasaki Synthesizer disk.  He did a good job.  Verrrry interesting!

Does anyone have the manual for a Super Graphix Jr. printer interface?  If you do, please make a copy and bring it to the meetings.  Thanks.

Next meeting will be on February 8th, 2007 at the Plaza Library at 6:30 pm in the Small Meeting Room.

Yup.  Still got some.  Commodore 64s, 128s, 1571s, 1541, printers, and monitors.  Talk with me about this at the next meeting or call me at 816.761.4777.  I am home most days ending in Y after 4:00 pm.

Editor’s Gambit

by Lenard Roach / lroach1@cugkc.cjb.net

You who have received your January copy of Ryte Bytes may be asking the question:  What the (expletive) happened?  You have the right to ask that question, for I was asking something similar when the issue came off the copier.  However, there was no time to fix the issue if I wanted to get it into the hands of CUGKC readers before the January meeting so it had to go out as is.  I apologize for such a shoddy job and I seek to do better in future issues.

What happened to the January issue was something involving the Lexmark copier that I use to make the newsletter.  Within its settings is a command called Fit To Page.  When I cut up the papers for pasting to a final sheet, I cut some of the articles longer than 11 inches.  Instead of printing a new copy I set the copier to Fit To Page mode and let the Lexmark work on making what I have done in the cutting to fit onto a standard piece of paper.  This created the wonderful eye sore of small and large style of print throughout the entire newsletter.  I guess there's no such thing as shortcuts when working with today's copiers.

Checking the roster I see that we have no membership anniversaries or anyone who owes the club dues for the month of February.  As a greedy slob I would like to remind you that if you are a member and your dues are up, please send in your monies at your earliest convenience.  This money helps in paying for things like the LoadStar disks we get every other month and the cost for printing and postage for the newsletter.  Thank you.

Now that the first of the year is here I am getting ready for my first visit to the CommVEx in Las Vegas at the end of July.  I asked the Fresno club president what exactly he would like for me to bring/talk about.  He suggested the GABE.U.PAK.64 and the book, RUN/STOP-RESTORE, so naturally I will travel with these items, along with my SX64 and a stock 64.  If there is anything else that members of the CUGKC can think of for me to take, then let me know by either phone call (913.522.1839) or email (lenardroach@yahoo.com).  Maybe some copies of our newsletter is about all I can think of.  I might take some of the programs we have presented in our meetings that have not been seen outside the CUGKC, but other than that I can't think of anything else.

As of this writing (January 17th), I have not received anything from the membership in the way of newsletter articles.  Jack will be having a double entry in this issue due to my wonderful email failure.  I know it's disappointing when you work all that time on an article and it doesn't show up in the newsletter.  I can only ask that you do like Jack and write your article in your word processor and send it to me as an attachment.  If you don't like to do that, then check the SENT file in your email and see if your work is still there and resend the article that way.  Please don't give up, for eventually you will get an email through.  If Yahoo Mail is the culprit, then please try my Hotmail address of lenardroach@hotmail.com.  I do want to hear from you and I do want to make your article a part of Ryte Bytes.  Everything sent to me I usually publish 100%.  Some tweaking is done to help the material flow, but I do my best to avoid changing the meaning of the text.  Any complaints then please call me at the above number.

Well, that's about it for this month.  Before I sign off, allow me to remind you that the February meeting will be held at the Plaza Library's Small Meeting Room on Thursday, February 8th at 6:30 pm.  Please plan on attending.  The meeting will be less of a success without your attendance.
