Ryte Bytes

October, 2001 -- Volume 22, Number 10

Ryte Bytes is the monthly newsletter of the Commodore Users Group of Kansas City (CUGKC). This newsletter will usually never appear on CUGKC's website before that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting. This is in deference to actual CUGKC members. They are supposed to receive each issue hot off the presses, but due to technical difficulties, Ryte Bytes has not been mailed out for the past several months. Until these technical difficulties are resolved, the only place to read Ryte Bytes is the website. The Webmaster will strive to publish it before the 1st of the month.

To all of our dues-paying members, CUGKC apologizes for the inconvenience -- hopefully, you will bear with us until we can once again mail out
Ryte Bytes to you.

I
f you would like to join CUGKC, we would love to have you!

The Trea$ury

by Jack Kincaid / jkinca1@cugkc.cjb.net

On September 11, 2001 the citizens of the United States of America lost their innocence. We have been wrapped in that shroud of innocence for a long time. There are holes in it but now it's a giant RIP. From now on at sporting events, social gatherings, and any place where a large number of people get together, we will be looking around at each other wondering if it could happen again. This IS exactly what the terrorists wanted. The ones that did the hideous act are dead, beyond our justice so now we go after the ones who put them up to it, 'uncle ben' because he inflamed their minds and hearts to do the deed. This is what we need to do. So what about our own home grown type of terrorism, the ones that use their pulpit in the church to inflame the minds and hearts of those in their flock to do harm to other people? We need to be very, very careful!

What can I say about the September meeting - there were nine people there, not too bad considering our membership is now only 13. There was one renewal - Jack Kincaid. There was a discussion about why there isn't a program. We had programs in the past, we had board meetings, we had a disk of the month too and we also had 15 to 20 people at the meetings. After the meetings everyone goes home and the CUGKC is forgotten about until the next meeting. I understand we all have jobs and families and other things going on in our lives. Like I have said before the board members do NOT have the sum total of knowledge about the Commodore that we pass out at the meetings. Lately most of the talk has centered around GEOS, The Wave, the Internet, and the Super CPU. As the song goes 'IS THAT ALL THERE IS?'

I still have 64s and 128s with 1541 and 1571 drives. I also have monitors and printers just sitting in my basement doing nothing. For a small price they can be in your home doing something! Call or see me at the next meeting. My phone # is 816-761-4777 and I am home most days after 4 PM.

Scribe's Scribbles

by Scott Heider / sheide1@cugkc.cjb.net

The Group meeting for September was held on Wednesday, September 5th at the Antioch Library. The attendance was 9 members.

John Strenge brought incorporation papers to be signed by officers of the club. He will now be sending them in to the state of Missouri so that the CUGKC will officially become CUGKC, Inc.

As Jack mentioned above, there was a discussion about why there isn't a formal program/demo at every monthly meeting. Here are some of the reasons that were mentioned (and some that were not mentioned):
1. What topics do you want to be presented? On many, many occasions, the officers have asked for program suggestions, but we very rarely get any suggestions from club members. If you want programs, then please suggest topics.
2. Who is willing/able to provide a program/demo? Lately, the answer is "almost nobody". In the past, Rich Wagner, Tom Moloney, and Yours Truly have demonstrated things in our areas of expertise (Geos, BBS, Internet, etc.), but we certainly don't "know it all" about the Commodore. If you know something about the Commodore that might be of interest to the rest of the club, then please volunteer to share your knowledge.

Finally, a reminder about the next Group meeting. See you at the Antioch Library at 7:00 on Wednesday, November 7th.
