Ryte Bytes

September, 2001 -- Volume 22, Number 9

Ryte Bytes is the monthly newsletter of the Commodore Users Group of Kansas City (CUGKC). This newsletter will usually never appear on CUGKC's website before that month's scheduled CUGKC meeting. This is in deference to actual CUGKC members. They are supposed to receive each issue hot off the presses, but due to technical difficulties, Ryte Bytes has not been mailed out for the past several months. Until these technical difficulties are resolved, the only place to read Ryte Bytes is the website. The Webmaster will strive to publish it before the 1st of the month.

To all of our dues-paying members, CUGKC apologizes for the inconvenience -- hopefully, you will bear with us until we can once again mail out
Ryte Bytes to you.

I
f you would like to join CUGKC, we would love to have you!

Here it will be September in a couple more weeks - where has the time gone? Another school year is about to start. School board bickering with everyone although in the last month or so I have not heard much from them. I wonder what they are up to now? It is a shame one gets so cynical but it has been going on for so long and I have not seen much improvement in the educational system in KC.

One improvement I did see was our meeting place! We had a phone line that we could use and we did! Tom Moloney set up his system and surfed the Internet and called our BBS. I do wish that everyone in the Club had a modem and used it if for nothing else but to get on the BBS. It really isn't hard.

Maybe by this time next month the Club will officially be incorporated. John Strenge is handling the paperwork for the Club. This is to protect the members from any lawsuits that might occur from any accident. Thanks John for your concern and help.

At the August meeting there were 8 members, not too bad for the first meeting in a new place. We had no renewals or new members.

Hey! I got an e-mail from Frank Scott at long last. He has been working long hours with little time for R&R. He is getting a promotion and will be moving to Louisville Kentucky soon. He still has 5 Chief games to see so maybe he will drop by one of our meetings.

I still have 64s and 128s with 1541 and 1571 drives. I also have monitors and printers just sitting in my basement doing nothing. For a small price they can be in your home doing something! Call or see me at the next meeting. My phone # is 816-761-4777 and I am home most days after 4 PM.

Scribe's Scribbles

by Scott Heider / sheide1@cugkc.cjb.net

The Group meeting for August was held on Wednesday, August 1st at the Antioch Library. The attendance was 8 members.

Yours Truly mentioned that Maurice Randall has definitely acquired CMD's Commodore assets, and he will be selling/supporting them via his new company named Click Here Software. He intends to set up a new website/webstore at http://cmdrkey.com as soon as possible. For more info, see Maurice's article below titled "CMD Production Update". Great news, indeed!

A vote was taken on the motion to incorporate the club, which was introduced at July's meeting by John Strenge. The vote for incorporation was unanimous. John graciously volunteered to gather/submit the necessary documentation to the state of Missouri.

Finally, a reminder about the next Group meeting. See you at the Antioch Library at 7:00 on Wednesday, September 5th.

CMD Production Update

by Maurice Randall / maurice@ia4u.net

Sun, 19 Aug 2001 11:01:39 -0400

For those unaware, I've taken over the entire CMD production and distribution.

Now for what's currently going on. I'm getting fairly well setup in my shop now for production and have actually produced a few items. I'll be contacting UPS this week and getting set up with them for regular package pick-ups. Also, I've applied for and have been approved for taking credit cards. I'm just waiting for the equipment to arrive now. Once that's in place, I'll be able to charge the orders as they go out the door.

Here's some of the products that I've built and have ready to ship:
4 SuperCPU's
2 FD-2000's
12 Turbo232's
Numerous JiffyDOS chips (all of the ordered units are built)
2 SmartMouse's

In addition to the above, I've been building up circuit boards for the various products such as the HD, FD, RamLink, and SuperCPU. There are about 3 dozen FD's ordered but I could only build two of them completely. CMD only had two drive mechanisms left in inventory. I've got 3 boxes of mechanisms on the way, most likely they'll show up tomorrow. Also, there were no power supplies for the FD's. 2 boxes of them came in last week. The same power supply works with the RamLink.

The next problem concerns the cases. There were only 16 FD cases left and only 4 SuperCPU cases. That's why I've only built 4 SuperCPU's. However, I've got 16 SuperCPU boards built up and tested so far, they're just waiting for cases to put them into. I'll keep building more since there are about 48 or them ordered.

There were no RamLink cases or HD cases left in the inventory. And there were only 9 1gig HD mechanisms left. I've got to find some more mechanisms. I've got 4 of the HD boards built so far. I need to build about 25 more.

As for the cases, I had ordered a lot of sheetmetal equipment about a week ago. Everything came in to the warehouse where I had ordered them and I was able to take my truck over there yesterday morning and pick the stuff up. The equipment included a sheetmetal shear, sheetmetal brake, hole puncher with punches and dies, and a sheetmetal notcher. I'm getting the equipment all set up in my shop so I can easily produce the cases here. This will save the trouble of having to order the cases to be built by an outside shop.

I want to thank everyone for being so patient so far. It won't be much longer and we'll have some nice CMD stuff heading out the door every day.

-Maurice
