ALABAMA
decommissioned section of AL 69
in Tuscaloosa Co.
Similar to U.S. highways such as
82 earlier in the 20th century, at some
point
State Route 69 was realigned. Major sections of the two-lane highway
depart from the straighter, more efficient modern pathway through Tuscaloosa
and Hale Counties.
In Tuscaloosa, the old sections are signed as County Road 95.
95 departs from AL 69 just past the southern terminus of the I-359
spur which runs from
downtown Tuscaloosa to Taylorville, passes the new
Shelton State Community College campus and a couple of dozen subdivisions
which
have sprung up in the last twenty years, then crosses the state highway
again just before the current end of four-laning. 95 then runs for several
miles east of 69, until it reaches the decommissioned bridge in the above
photograph. One must then rejoin AL 69 in order to continue southward
to Moundville in Hale County.
The other side of the bridge can be approached from the south using
the other end of Co. 95, which is disconnected from the northern
stretches.
