Old sequin-bordered mileage sign on Interstate 20
headed east towards Georgia
Two such signs exist along this stretch of I-20 East. Both are just west of the city of Oxford. I associate these types of signs with the Pine Belt of Mississippi, where I-59 runs to Slidell, LA. It seems they were numerous in that area when I was a kid. Or maybe it's just that there's nothing else to look at along that stretch of highway except how far is it to the next exit. The reflective sequins along the border have given way to a simple white striping around the edge of most markers these days. A bit of rust and a dingy tint to the green paint as it weathers are also trademarks of these older signs, which I suppose must be made of steel as opposed to the aluminum alloy required today.
